About the Veterans of Foreign Wars

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service.  These chapters were merged in 1914 to form the VFW which was incorporated in 1918.  There are currently 1.4 million men and women who belong to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

About VFW Post 981

Chartered as Arlington VFW Post 981 on October 5 1922 in Arlington Heights, IL., it is one of the oldest VFW posts in Illinois.

Regular meetings take place the first Wednesday of every month starting at 7:00 PM

VFW Post 981 has an active program of supporting and participating in events benefiting veterans and active duty troops; outings for Post members to baseball games, movies, Arlington Racetrack and our Christmas party, all costing little to members; and visits to VA hospitals and retirement homes.  See our color guard at the Help USA Troops gathering on April 29 2018:

We raise money through Poppy sales and sales of caps and stickers to the public to be used only for veteran and service member relief.

We march in Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day parades in the suburbs we represent, and observe Veterans Day with a 21-gun salute at our meeting place .

Our color guard participates in various activities that honor fellow veterans and our country.  Most recently they presented the flag at the March 27 2018 ceremony honoring Vietnam Era Veterans.  The ceremony was hosted by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi from the 8th Congressional District and the Village Presidents of Wheeling and Buffalo Grove.
