  Joining the Veterans of Foreign Wars

The fundamental difference between our organization and other veterans organizations, and one in which we take great pride, is our eligibility qualifications.



Do You Qualify?

If you have received a campaign medal for overseas service, have served 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days in Korea, or have ever received hostile fire or imminent danger pay, then you're eligible to join our ranks.

This encompasses the major wars of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan.  It also encompasses action in Panama, Grenada, Kosovo to name a few.  Support of those wars in areas adjacent to the actual countries are included in many cases.

Occupation duty after WWII until 1956 in most foreign areas, duty in Berlin prior to November 1990, and service on the Korean penninsula at any time up through the present will also qualify you.

I'm Not Sure Whether I Can Join

Come 15 minutes before one of our regular meetings.  Bring a copy of your DD214 and other documents like orders, TDY assignments, etc that show your service.  Fill out the following application:

Our post officers will welcome you and help you determine whether you can join us.


VFW Post 981 meets at 7:00 PM on the first Wednesday of each month at  AMVETS Post 66
(located at 700 McHenry Rd in Wheeling).  Look for VFW Sign under AMVETS signs in front.
